Outline the anatomical course of the ureter
A
Ureter
• Approaches pelvis along medial aspect of psoas
• Enters pelvis at brim, passing over the bifurcation of the common iliac artery
• Passes inferiorly and anteriorly along the pelvic sidewall retroperitoneally, medial to the branches of the internal iliac artery.
• Passes anteriorly superior to the uterosacral ligaments, medial to pelvic sidewall (levator ani), lateral to the cervix and inferior to the uterine artery (‘water under the bridge’) before entering the trigone of the bladder.
