Urbanisation Flashcards
What is urbanisation?
It is the growth in the proportion of a country’s population living in urban areas. It happens all over the world - more than 50% of the world currently live in urban areas (3.4 billion) and this increases every day.
Where does urbanisation happen fastest?
In poorer countries.
How does urbanisation differ between richer and poorer countries? 3 reasons.
- Most of the population in MEDCs already live in urban areas eg 80% of the UK’s population live in urban areas
- Not many of the population in poorer countries currently live in urban areas eg around 25% of Bangladesh’s population live in urban areas
- Most urbanisation that’s happening in the world today is going on in poorer countries and at a fast pace

Why do people in poorer countries migrate from rural to urban areas? 2 reasons.
- A shortage of services (eg education, access to power and clean water) in rural areas. Also, people believe that they will have a better quality of life in urban areas, though this is not always the case
- There are more jobs in urban areas. Industry is attracted to cities because there’s a larger workforce and better infrastructure than in rural areas
Why do people in richer countries migrate from rural to urban areas? 2 reasons.
- Most urbanisation in rich countries occurred during the Industrial and Agricultural Revolutions (18th and 19th centuries) . Machinery replaced people in farm labour and factories were made in urban areas for people to work in
- In the late 20th century, people left run-down inner city areas and moved to the country. But people are now being encouraged back with the redevelopment of these areas
