Q

What does Stage 1’s population pyramid resemble? List 4 reasons why it looks like this.

A

It looks a bit like a spearhead (squashed triangle)

  • High BR because no contraception
  • High BR because high infant mortality so people have more children a couple could survive
  • High DR because poor healthcare
  • Zero population growth
  • Low life expectancy so the population is mainly young people

Q

What does Stage 2’s population pyramid resemble? List 4 reasons why it looks like this.

A

It looks a bit like a triangle

  • High BR because no contraception
  • High BR because economy is agriculture based; people have many children to work on farms
  • Falling DR because improving healthcare
  • Very high population growth
  • Increased life expectancy but the population is still mainly young people

Q

What does Stage 3’s population pyramid resemble? List 4 reasons why it looks like this.

A

It looks a bit like a bullet

  • Rapidly falling BR because emancipation of women and better education
  • Rapidly falling BR because contraception increases
  • Rapidly falling BR because jobs have become industrialised
  • Falling DR because improving healthcare
  • High population growth
  • Increased life expectancy so more people are living to be older

Q

What does Stage 4’s population pyramid resemble? Why does it look like that?

A

It looks a bit like a rocket

  • Low BR because people migrate to urban areas. They have more money so want more possessions and less kids
  • Low and fluctuating BR because economy is agriculture based; people have many children to work on farms
  • Low and fluctuating DR
  • Zero population growth
  • High life expectancy so even more people live to be older
17
Q

What does Stage 5’s population pyramid resemble? Why does it look like that?

A

It looks a bit like a lava lamp/fan

  • Slowly falling BR because less money available to raise children because of dependant elderly relatives
  • Low and fluctuating DR
  • Negative population growth
  • More older people than young people

Q

PRACTICE QUESTION

Explain how and why the natural increase of population changes in Stage 2. (4 marks)

A
  • The birth rate remains high because there is little use of contraception
  • but improvements in medicine lead to a decline in the death rate.
  • The rate of natural increase gets larger as the difference between the birth and the death rates get larger.
