Population Movements Flashcards
Define migration.
The movement of people from one area to another.
What is the difference between immigration and emigration?
When people move into an area, it’s called immigration. The people are known as immigrants
When people leave an area, it’s called emigration. The people are known as emigrants.
What is a push factor? Can you name some?
Push factors are the things about a person’s place of origin that make them want to move away. They are usually negative things like
- Lack of job opportunities
- Poor living conditions
- War
- Natural disaster
- Low wages
- Housing shortages
What is a pull factor? Can you name some?
Pull factors are things about a person’s destination that attracts them. They’re usually positive things like:
- More job opportunities
- Better standard of living
- Safe (not war torn or natural disaster-prone)
- Higher wages
- Better housing
- Better education and healthcare services
What are 2 positive impacts of migration on the source country? (where they come from)
- Reduced demand on services, eg schools and hospitals
- Money is sent back to the source country by emigrants
What are 2 positive impacts of migration on the receiving country? (where they go to)
- Increased labour force - young people immigrate to find work
- Migrant workers pay taxes that help to fund services
What are 3 negative impacts of migration on the source country?
- Labour shortage - it’s usually people of working age that emigrate
- Skills shortage - sometimes it’s the highly educated people that emigrate (‘brain drain’)
- Ageing population - there’s a high proportion of older people left
What are 3 negative impacts of migration on the receiving country?
- Locals and immigrants compete for jobs - this can lead to social tension and sometimes conflict even though most of those against immigration are people who don’t have any qualifications or the effort to get up and go find themselves a job so blame it on migration X
- Increased demand for services eg overcrowding in schools and hospitals
- Not all the money earnt by immigrants is spent in the destination country - some is sent back to their country of origin
