Urbanisation Flashcards
Urbanisation
an increase in the proportion of people living in urban areas compared to rural ones
more people are moving to rural areas globally
Urban population VS Urban growth
HICs have a higher urban pop as they have already experienced their industrial revolution and most of the pop already migrated
LICs have more urban growth as they enter their indistrial revolution and more people are drawn to urban areas form rural ones (rural to urban migration)
Factors that lead to urbanisation
rural to urban migration:
push and pull factors
push: fewer services, poor transport links
pull: access to services, better jobs, better transport links
Natural Increase:
younger people of child bearing age tend to move to urban areas for work so more babies are born and higher natural increase.
Megacity
a city with more than 10 million people
eg Paris, Tokyo, Lagos, Rio, New York
Asia has the most megacities and Australia has none
Counter-urbanisation
evident in mainly HICs
People move away from urban areas to live in rural ones:
better air quality
less busy
earlier retirement
parents move away for the QOL of their child
