the expansion of urban areas into the surrounding countryside
this can be because of lack of housing or
due to a lack of affordable housing within central London so many residents move out to the suburbs where housing can be cheaper and more abundant.
rural-urban fringe
The area of land between built up urban area and rural countryside mostly golf course and farm land
brownfield sites
land that has already been built on
eg derelict factories

many potential sites since industry declined and factories closed

old buildings may need to be demolished first, costly
greenfield sites
land never built on before
eg fields

no demolition or decontamination costs
