A

Push factors:why people leave the countryside
-Farming is hard and poorly paid
-Farming is often at subsistence level,leaving nothing to sell
-Rural areas are isolated,often with few services

Energy:there have been frequent power cuts and blackouts so poorer people have been illegally tapping into the main supply of electricity

Water supply:12% of Rio’s population have no running water,droughts make water more expensive

-smog occurs in natural mist or fog mixes with exhaust fumes

-Rivers are polluted by open sewers in the favelas because there are no sewer pipes

-a high murder rate of 20 per 1000 people in many favelas
-drug gangs can dominate

Health
-infant mortality rates are as high as 50 per 1000
-waste cannot be disposed of and builds up in street increasing disease

Services
-12% of homes have no running water
-30% have no electricity
-50% have no sewage connections

Construction
-houses are built with basic materials on steep slopes
-heavy rain causes landslides

Unemployment
-unemployment rates are as high as 20%
-average incomes may be less then £75 a month
