what is a world city?
has a political or financial influence over the whole world. dominant in international trade.
physical factors in urban forms?
Topography - influence growth of city e.g. steep slope harder to build on and less accessible.
Water - presence of lakes and seas limit urban growth. some cities may grow along a river.
Natural Resources - rich resources encourage growth in size and population.
Land Type - some ground surfaces more difficult or expensive to build on.
human factors in urban forms?
Planning - developing countries growth is unplanned, expansion of slums. planned developments, open space
Infrastructure - new developments built along transport links, lead to liner growth.
Land Value - highest usually found in city centre, where you would locate profitable businesses.
land use patterns in a developed world?
tend to have a CBD surrounded by housing.
Inner City Areas - high land value, high density, wages low, residents live in poverty, ethnic minorities.
Semi-Rural Areas - lower land value, less dense, more open space, larger houses, wealthy residents.

Around City Centre - land value high, high cost housing, wages high, wealthy residents.
Zone of Medium Cost Housing - started as informal settlements, gradually improved.
Outskirts - land value low, informal housing, limited water and electricity, poor pay, high poverty.

what is a post-modern western city?
they have more facilities in different places, focus on IT and media, have less uniform architecture, planning priorities aesthetic look instead of purpose and it has higher social and economic inequality.
