Define Urbanisation
Urbanisation is when the proportion of the population living in the urban centre increases.
Why does Urbanisation occur?
push and pull factors which cause migration, for instance better jobs, better housing, better healthcare, better education. Also caused by natural increase.
Define suburbanisation
suburbanisation is when people move out of the centre to the outskirts of the city
Why does suburbanisation occur
The city can become over crowded and people long for more space. Also as transport links develop it can be easier to commute into the city, where previously this has not been possible. it also happens when a couple want to start a family or retire.
Negatives of suburbanisation
it can cause a complex pattern of wealthy and poor areas develop, this causes segregation.
Define Counter-urbanisation
Counter- urbanisation is when people move out of the city to the rural areas
Why does counter-urbanisation occur
- due to improvements in technology and communications people can now work from home
- continued development of transport links, can commute from further away.
- property prices in the city centre and in the suburbs can be very high.
Define Urban resurgence
Urban resurgence is the movement of people back to the city centre.
Why does urban resurgence occur
it occurs due to the lack of jobs in the suburbs and rural areas
it also occurs due to new development in the city.

The increase in the total population of a town

The increase in the size or geographical footprint of a city.
What is a megacity
a urban area where over 10 million people live.

Tokyo
What is a world city
a city that has political and financial influence over the whole world. They usually dominate international trade.
What is gentrification
the process of housing improvements, changes in neighbourhood composition and low income groups are displaced by more affluent groups.
