Urban Biodiversity: Flashcards
Biodiversity:
variety of life forms present in a particular ecosystem, region, or Earth as a whole
Biodiversity loss:
Decline in the variety and abundance of living organisms in ecosystems, resulting from human activities like habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change.
Ecosystem services:
Benefits that humans obtain from ecosystems, including provisioning services like food and water, supporting services such as climate regulation and water purification.
Education campaign:
Coordinated effort to inform, raise awareness, and promote understanding about a specific topic or issue through different communication channels and activities.
Generic restoration:
The process of restoring degraded or damages ecosystems to a functional and healthy state using general techniques applicable across different types of ecosystems.
Seed banks:
Facility or organization that stores and preserves seeds or various plants to conserve genetic diversity and ensure their availability for future use.
Ex situation conservation:
Protecting and preserving species outside their natural habitats, like zoos, botanical gardens, to prevent extinction and promote species recovery.
Wildlife corridors:
Strips of natural habitat that connect fragmented habitats, allowing animals to move between isolated areas and maintain genetic diversity.
Climate change:
Long-term changes in Earth’s climate patterns, including temperature, precipitation, and weather events, often caused by human activities like burning fossil fuels and deforestation.
