Housing
GEAR - Glasgow’s Eastern Area Renewal
Began in the 1970’s and focused on areas around Bridgeton and Dalmarnock & involved renovation of tenement housing, building of new housing, industrial estates, health centres and landscaping to improve ‘run-down’ appearance. Funded by both public money through Government aid such as loans and rent free factories and private sector funding, mainly through building The Forge Shopping Centre.
Crown Street Regeneration Project
Began in the 1990’s and focused on The Gorbals. Involved replacing high rise and tenement flats with new lower density affordable housing. Also included the building of a ‘High Street’ with local shops and services, landscaping and trees.

Housing Developments
From the 1960’s onwards, new towns, eg East Kilbride, and council estates like Castlemilk, were built on greenfield sites on the outskirts of the city to combat overcrowding in the inner city slums.

Transport
Metro Rio
Need for Change: The system is still small, with only 2 lines and 35 stations. It is always crowded, particularly during rush hour.
Benefits: Metro Line 1 is being extended, adding an extra 6 stations between Ipanema and Barra de Tijuca.
The 14km will increase capacity by 230,000 passengers per day.
Tram
Need for Change: Existing services are poor and extremely busy. Trams often carry more than their capacity and can de-rail, causing deaths and destruction.
Benefits: Network will have 42 stops serving the business district, the Olympic press village and Santos Dumont Airport. New contract to build and operate a 28km tram network in Rio.
Airports
Need for Change: The airports are ‘tired’ and have a low capacity for such a popular tourist destination.
Benefits: Modernisation of facilities, eg Terminal 1. Expansion with more parking.
