Climate Change Flashcards
Human Causes
- The burning of fossil fuels for transport, industry and power, producing CO2.
- Worldwide deforestation, sometimes involving rainforest burning, which also produces CO2.
- Car exhausts and nitrogen fertilizers, producing nitrous oxide.
- CFC’s (Chlorofluorocarbons) are increasing in our atmosphere due to human use of aerosols, fridges and air conditioning units.
- Atom bomb testing
- Traffic pollution
- Rubbish Dumps
Effects
Agriculture & forests
A warming climate could improve growing conditions and increase productivity. Plant growth above 6*C so plants could grow for longer.
Soils
We rely on soils to sustain biodiversity, support agriculture and forestry, regulate the water and store carbon. Soils and vegetation may be altered by changes to rainfall patterns and increased temperature.
Water
As our climate warms and rainfall patterns change, there may be increased competition for water. Summer droughts may become more frequent and severe, causing problems for water equality in Scotland.
Coasts
Sea level rise is already having a widespread impact on Scotlands coast. With this set to increase over the coming decades, we can expect to see more coastal flooding, erosion and coastline retreat. This has consequences for coastal populations and may cause forced migration
