Urban Flashcards
What are the challenges of Urban Growth?
More people = more demand of resuorces
more transport = more pollution
More exapansion = Opression of enviorment (green space)
more building = less green space.
Explain how pollutants from traffic can create challenges?
Enviormental Pollution:
In Mexico City, air pollution from traffic causes smog, people get Braunchitis - lung disease.
Pollutants entering water sources, cause Cholera (dirty water disease).
How Vehicle Pollution is reduced:
Catalyctic converters: less sulphur released from gas emissions.
MOT’s: Inspection of car damages.
Increase public transport - less people on their cars individually.
List some problems when living in a slum? Name a case study.
In Dharavi….
Over crowded - spread disease.
Lack of sanitation - high rate of disease.
Chemicals - fossil fuels polluting water supply.
Housing lacks quality - easy to collapse; more injury.
Explain the Cycle of Poverty/Deprivation.
Cycle of pevery/deprivation:
1= People ill 2= no work 3= cant make money 4= cant pay children education 5= stay in poverty; children dont have the education to work 6= the area live gets a worse reputation.
Evaluate the issues from a slum.
- Lack of clean water - DISEASE
- Crime - Mo’ money m8.
- Sex more often - more mouths to guzzle’ and feed to increase survival.
Showcase the oppurtunites from a slum; state a case study.
Work avalible - minimal wage work (despite being illegal)
More money - actual money to educate children
Grow up children - raise them into education
Gov. gets money - educated children can work legally, meaning more income
Exit Pov. Cycle - bring the families with you!
What are the effects of bulldozing the slums? Now what was that case study…
World Cup event, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the slums are bulldozed, meaning…
New development of land
Improves image
Deters illegal migrants
They can re-build themselves
Built on some irrational places like hills, so no bulldozers can enter their dungeons!
Evaluate and explain the Campbridge guided busway:
Campbridge guided busway: less cars less traffic eco-friendly meant to connect to manchester
What is deprivation? What are its effects?
A persons quality of life, falls below the minimal Governemt expectations. The prices of houses, education, police, access to green space, safety all rise.
How is a regeneration scheme used to improve communities? Use a case study.
Regeneration: Hackney, UK, East London (community spirit)
They replace high rise, with low rise infrastructure, for better health. Improve lighting and CCTV to reduce crime; more green space to improve communities; community help-centre; youth club for teens i.e. YMCA. (yo’ man coon anus)
How is an area rejuvinated from derelict, to ‘new and improved’?
Regeneration: London Docklands (economic value)
That place is a brown site (area of no use). It is converted to have better infrastructure; it employs people; more public transport; high-tech as fuck (skilled workers). Mo’ money for the gov. biiiitcheees!
List the descriptions for a carbon-zero, urbanised area.
Produces more energy than it uses. Has eco-homes/offices Creates power via ground-source heat pumps Has a big ass wind turbine Reduce heat loss ---ELECTRO CARS---
State a case study, which is an eco-city…
Zero energy developments; BedZed: Larges carbon neutral communites Renewable materials for bulding Public transport on bikes/electric cars Biofuels via timber All waste is recycled
Explain the benefits of Greening and mention a case study.
Greening: Case study New york: Add more green space - plants trees, bushes etc. Attracts new business Photosynthesis improves air quality Reduce air pollution Attracts more tourists
