Q

Describe the three main quality of life indicators (aka HDI - human development index).

A

★GDP - A monetary value of all the capital produced by a country over a specified span of time.
★Life Expectancy - An average for how long people live until they die of old age. Wealthier countries result in people with long lives.
★Employment - The rate of employment over a period of time. An rapid increase in development is proof of rapid devleopment for an LEDC. For an MEDC, employment loss result in economical recession.

Q

How does tourism closes the development gap? Evaluate the benefits and challenges that could occur. State an example you have studied.

A

In Kenya, Safari’s are an exotic physical attraction. Tourism there brings job opportunities, resulting in more disposable income used to buy clothes, food and other luxuries improving the quality of life - therefore also boosting the economy. Because tourism creates so many spaces for jobs, unemployed people can easily join, effectively mitigating the poverty cycle; ensuring a gradual closed development gap for the future.

On the other hand, tourism has the potency to disrupt the natural habitats - one of the primary reasons tourist come to Kenya in the first place. Littering can lead the animals to consume potentially dangerous products and can become an eyesore for tourists, causing a decline in tourist numbers and capital. In addition, the native Masai tribes who thrive in the rural lands have their land becoming replaced by tourist facilities or areas. This foreign introduction erodes traditional culture.

Q

In Menorca, what are the social, economic and environmental - negative and positive impacts of tourism?

A

Rather, lets deconstruct some points for a change… Keep things simple :-)

⍟Tourism brings, economically…
P★ Job Opportunities
D★ Disposable income to improve quality of life; beneficial for the economy
⍟For the people (social)…
P★ Taxes would increase, due to the larger rate of employment.
D★ Healthcare is upgraded as more people will live longer life spans.
⍟However, for the enviorment…
P★ Tourism can interfere with the wildlife
D★ Pollution becomes more frequent and mostly lack of education from tourists results in reckless damage for the environment (i.e. littering).

Q

Explain the last stages of the butler model.

A

★Decline: The resort is ‘declining’ in tourist numbers. This is due to the internet making long haul and exotic flights cheaper and an advancement of technology; flights have become cheaper.
★Regeneration: Methods are put to stop stagnation from continuing. Rather, a resort alters its means to attract tourists, to keep the resort relevant. More proabable, to prevent decline.

Q

How can conflict with locals become relevant at tourist honey pot locations? State an example you have studied.

A

In Bowness, Windemere, tourism has lead to unleashed dogs to mobilise on farm land. Farmers notice this conflict, as the dogs are known to harm their farm animals.

Also, cars from the tourists are notorious to park on grass verges due to lack of parking space. The locals are interfered as these cars block spaces that are not meant for parking.
