What are 5 changes that have taken place in Glasgow’s CBD?
- Modern Buildings and Shops
- Pedestrianised Streets
- Indoor Shopping Centre
- Motorways
- Repurposed Buildings
Why are there Pedestrianised Streets?
- Pedestrianised streets such as Buchanan Street make it safer for shoppers as there are no cars.
- This also helps to improve the environmental quality in the CBD as there is less air pollution.
Why are there Indoor Shopping Centres?
- Indoor shopping centres such as the St Enoch centre allow people to shop in all weathers as it is under cover.
- It is more convenient for shoppers as all the shops are close together.
Why have buildings been repurposed?
- This makes good use of the valuable land in the CBD as it is the most expensive land use zone. e.g. The GPO
Why have Motorways been built?
- The M8 motorway was constructed to divert traffic away from the CBD to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.
- It also increases accessibility to the city centre.
Why are there Modern Buildings and Shops?
- Smaller independent shops are being replaced with multi-national companies, as they can afford the high rent in the CBD.
- This means there are more repetitive businesses.
Name 4 Changes which have taken place in Glasgow’s Inner City.
- Docks replaced by the Entertainment Industry.
- Brownfield sites repurposed into student accommodation.
- High rises in the Gorbals demolished and replaced by modern tenement housing.
- Tenement houses in Patrick knocked through to make flats more spacious.
Why has the Shipbuilding Industry been replaced by the Entertainment Industry?
- Due to industrial decline (e.g. shipbuilding) unemployment rates rose and the dockyards became derelict.
- The brownfield site of the former docks became home to the entertainment industry including the SSE Hydro and BBC Scotland.
What has happened to derelict buildings as industry has moved out?
- As industry has moved out, old industrial buildings lay empty.
- Former industrial sites have been transformed into student accommodation to house the growing student population.
How were tenements improved?
- Tenements were small with little outdoor space.
- In Partick, tenement houses were knocked through to make bigger, more spacious flats.
How were High rises changed?
- High rises suffered from damp and antisocial behaviour.
- High rises in the Gorbals were demolished and replaced with new-style tenement housing which was more spacious and had access to outdoor space.
Explain 6 changes in Glasgows Suburbs/ Rural-Urban Fringe.
Industry
- As a developed country, we don’t rely on agriculture as much as we used to. Instead, most of our food is imported from other countries and there are few things that we grow ourselves.
- The West of Scotland Science Park is an area in the West of Glasgow whereby farmland has been turned into a business and research park.
- Because the science park is on a greenfield site there is also space to expand and include things such as sports facilities. There is also little traffic congestion as it is on the edge of town.
Housing
- Families/Retired people are moving out of the city in search for a quieter life with easy access to the countryside.
- In the Suburbs, new housing developments are made up of spacious, detached houses.
- Wallace Fields is a new housing development to the North - East of Glasgow on a greenfield site.
What were 6 problems found in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro?
- Lack of facilities including schools and running water.
- Lack of utilities such as sewerage and power.
- Located on hills and so we’re prone to landslides.
- Built without legal permission.
- High incidence of disease.
- High unemployment rates.
- Houses made from scrap materials.
- Overcrowding leading to a lack of privacy.

- Self-help schemes are when local people are provided with materials such as bricks to improve their own homes.
- Low-quality, wooden shacks were upgraded to permanent dwellings with some services such as clean piped-water.
- Roads have been built allowing rubbish collections to take place and prevent the build up of rubbish.
- In some favelas, cable cars have been constructed to improve transport for residents.
- Due to a lack of educational opportunities for young people, schools have been built for the communities.
- Drug related crime was an issue so security has been improved by having more police patrols.
~ The police use heavy weapons and armoured vehicles to drive out drug gangs.
