uptake in the root Flashcards
where are root cells, and what do they do?
specialised cells on the epidermis of the roots
provide a large surface area for water and mineral ions absorption
what are 2 adaptations of root hair cells?
thin cell walls - reduce diffusion distance
close contain with soil particles - increasing the efficiency of absorption
what is the cortex?
a layer of loosely packed cells, located beneath the epidermis.
this allows for easy movement of water and solutes
what is the Casparian strip?
a waterproof band of suberin
what is the role of the casparian strip?
it forces water and solutes to pass through the cell membranes (symplast route) rather than between cells (apoplast route).
what is the stele
the central part of the root, containing the xylem and phloem
