Upper respiratory tract II Flashcards
What nerves supply sensory innervation to the nose and nasopharynx?
The olfactory nerve (CN I) and the ophthalmic (CN V1) and maxillary (CN V2) divisions of the trigeminal nerve (CN V).
What does the olfactory nerve convey?
SVA fibers transmit smell from the upper nasal mucosa to the brain.
What sensory fibers do the ophthalmic (CN V1) and maxillary (CN V2) nerves convey?
GSA fibers transmit general sensation from nasal mucosa to the trigeminal ganglion and the brain.
What nerves supply motor innervation to the nose and nasopharynx?
The facial nerve (CN VII), the vagus nerve (CN X), and postganglionic sympathetics.
What motor fibers does the facial nerve (CN VII) convey?
SVE fibers transmit motor signals to muscles of facial expression responsible for nostril shape regulation.
What motor fibers does the vagus nerve convey in the nasopharynx?
SVE fibers transmit motor signals to superior constrictor muscles of the nasopharynx (together with the pharyngeal plexus) to constrict the pharyngeal wall during swallowing.
What do the postganglionic sympathetics of the nose and nasopharynx convey, and where do they originate?
They innervate the smooth muscles and glands of the nasal mucosa. These fibers synapse in and depart from the sympathetic chain and the superior cervical ganglion, then piggyback along arteries to reach the nasal mucosa.
What are the three branches of the trigeminal nerve (CN V)?
The ophthalmic nerve (CN V1), the maxillary nerve (CN V2), and the mandibular nerve (CN V3).
What does the ophthalmic nerve (CN V1) convey?
Sensory GSA to the upper face.
What does the maxillary nerve (CN V2) convey?
Sensory GSA to the mid face.
What sensory fibers does the mandibular nerve (CN V3) convey?
GSA to the lower face.
What motor fibers does the mandibular nerve (CN V3) convey?
SVE to the muscles of the first pharyngeal arch i.e. muscles moving the mandible.
