Upper Respiratory System Flashcards
External portion of the nose
Consists of bony, cartilaginous frame covered by skin containing sebaceous glands
Nasal bones
Two bones meet and are surrounded by frontal bone to form root
What bone is the nose surrounded by at its base?
The maxilla
Bones that separate nasal and mouth cavities
Palatine bones
Bone that separates roof of nose from cranial cavity
Cribriform plate
What happens after enters through nostrils (nares)?
Passes into nasal vestibule (space contained within flexible tissue of nose)
Nasal hairs
In epithelium of vestibule and trap large particles of air
What does the nasal septum do?
Divide nasal cavity into left and right sides. Anterior portion (hyaline cartilage) supports dorsum and apex of nose, superior portion is olfactory (smell) region. Mucus produced in paranasal sinuses and tears - clean and moisten naval cavity
What passes over respiratory mucosa and what does it contain?
Air passes over respiratory mucosa which contain a rich blood supply
Paranasal sinuses
Four pairs of air containing spaces open or drain into nasal cavity, each is lined with respiratory mucosa
Pharynx
Tube of skeletal muscle lined by mucous membrane
Where is the Pharynx located and which systems is it shared by?
Extends from the base of skull to the oesophagus. Shared by respiratory and digestive systems
What are the major regions of the Pharynx?
Nasopharynx
Oropharynx
Laryngopharynx
What is the superior portion of the Pharynx?
Nasopharynx
Nasopharynx
Superior portion of pharynx
Contains pharyngeal tonsil and pharyngeal openings of auditory tubes
Oropharynx
Connects directly to oral cavity
What is the inferior portion of the Pharynx?
Laryngopharynx
Laryngopharynx
Inferior portion of pharynx
Between hyoid bone and entrance to larynx and esophagus
Conducting Zone
Include organs and structures not directly involved in gas exchange. From nasal cavity to large bronchioles.
