Functions And Passage Of Air Flow Flashcards

1
Q

Functions of the Respiratory System

A
  1. Protect respiratory surfaces from dehydertion, temp changes and pathogens
  2. Provide extensive surface area for gas exchange between air and circulating blood (~130m^2)
  3. Move air to and from exchange surfaces of lungs
  4. Produce sounds via vocal chords in larynx. Vibrate
  5. Detect odours w. Olfactory receptors in nasal cavity

Q

Why is nose breathing better than mouth?

A

Respiratory mucosa rests on thin- walled veins that warm incoming air
Mucous glands and goblet cells moistens air and traps dust and bacteria. The oral mucosa perfums none of these functions.
