Functions And Passage Of Air Flow Flashcards
1
Q
Functions of the Respiratory System
A
- Protect respiratory surfaces from dehydertion, temp changes and pathogens
- Provide extensive surface area for gas exchange between air and circulating blood (~130m^2)
- Move air to and from exchange surfaces of lungs
- Produce sounds via vocal chords in larynx. Vibrate
- Detect odours w. Olfactory receptors in nasal cavity
2
Q
Why is nose breathing better than mouth?
A
Respiratory mucosa rests on thin- walled veins that warm incoming air
Mucous glands and goblet cells moistens air and traps dust and bacteria. The oral mucosa perfums none of these functions.
3
Q
Functions of the conducting zone
A
Provide a passage for incoming and outgoing air, remove debris and pathogens from air, warm and humidify air.
4
Q
Respiratory zone
A
Where gas exchange occurs
5
Q
Upper systems of the respiratory system
A
Nose, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and pharynx
