Upper Respiratory Exam Flashcards
1
Q
To examine the ear must straighten the canal by doing what in adults vs kids?
A
- adults= pull up and out and away
- kids= pull DOWN and out and away
2
Q
What is conductive hearing loss?
A
- external or middle ear problem (conductive phase)
- sound travel through air vibrations of TM throuhg ossicles to cochlea
Ex) cerumen, tympanic perferation, middle ear effusion
3
Q
What is sensorineural loss?
A
- inner ear, cochlear nerve or central brain connection problem
- sensorineural phase
- cochlea and cochlear n transmit impluse to brain
4
Q
How do you perform the whisper test?
A
- stand behind pt and have them occlude 1 ear
- whisper combo of letters/numbers and have pt repeat sequence
- normal= pt correctly repeats the sequence or after 2 sequences can identify 3 of 6
- abnormal= pt incorrectly identifies 4 of 6
5
Q
What is the weber part of weber and rinne test?
A
- weber= tests for lateralization
- vibrate tuning fork place on top of pts head
- normal= sound lateralizes to both ears equally
- abnormal= sound lateralize to 1 ear
- *either have conduction loss in that ear or sensorineural loss in opposite ear
6
Q
What is the rinne part of weber and rinne test?
A
- compares air and bone conduction
- vibrating tuning fork on mastoid bone behind ear level with canal
- when pt no longer hears sound place fork close to ear canal and see if they hear the sound adn for how long
- normal AC > BC
- if AC = BC or BC > AC there is conductive loss to that ear
7
Q
What do you use to inspect inside the nose?
A
-otoscope
