Upper limbs Flashcards
What passes through the carpal tunnel?
The median nerve and 9 flexor tendons.
What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
Swelling within the carpal tunnel leads to median nerve compression.
Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Many are idiopathic.
Rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy diabetes, chronic renal failure, hypothyroidism.
Fractures of the wrist.
What fracture of the wrist is a factor for developing carpal tunnel syndrome.
Coles fracture.
Distal ulna or radius where the bone is bent backwards.
Carpal tunnel presentation
Parasthesia in thumb and 2 1/2 radial (lateral fingers) which is worse at night weakness of thumb.
Carpal tunnel non-operative treatments.
Wrist splints at night to prevent flexion. Injections of corticosteroids.
Surgical treatment.
Caral tunnel decompression by dividing the transverse carpal ligament.
Highly successful and low risk.
Cubital tunnel syndrome
Compression of ulcer nerve behind medial epicondyle. Usually tightness of osbornes fascia.
Cubital tunnel symptoms
Paraesthesia of ulcer 1 1/2 fingers and weakness of muscles.
