Upper GI tract structure and function Flashcards
How is mastication controlled?

Reflex: automatic when food is in mouth.
What prevents food from entering the nasal cavity?
Soft palate
What prevents food from entering the lower respiratory tract?

Facial and glossopharyngeal nerves
stimulation causes profuse salivary secretion.
What is the sympathetic control of salivary secretion?
Stimulated by adrenoreceptors.
Is salvation affected by vagus?

What is the reflex control of salivary secretion?
Food in the mouth activates chemoreceptors.
What are the functions of the stomach?
Temporary store of ingested material.
Dissolve food particles and initiate digestive process.
Control delivery of contents to small intestine.
