UPPER EXTREMITY Flashcards
MET - TRAPEZIUS - SUPINE
- Pt supine
- Place one hand under the head
- Place other hand on top of shoulder
- Place the symptomatic trapezius in a position of bind by side bending head away from symptomatic side
- Ask pt to side bend head to the symptomatic side or elevate the shoulder on the symptomatic shoulder
- Resist
- Hold for 10 seconds
- After 10 seconds ask pt to relax and take a deep breath in and out
- While the pt is breathing out use the head to take the traps into the next place of bind
MET - SPLENI AND SEMISPINALIS - SUPINE
Pt supine
Lift head up and push down into the pillow
Breathe and push the head up more
Can cross the forearms to do this
MET - PECTORALIS MINOR - SUPINE
- Pt supine
- Place your hand closest to pt head under the scapula
- Place other hand over the front of pt shoulder
- Ask pt to protract their shoulder
- Resist
- Hold for 10 seconds and get pt to breathe in and out
- On the out breath push into pt shoulder to encourage retraction and stretch the pectoralis minor
MET - PECTORALIS MINOR - SIDE LYING
- Pt side-lying on the asymptomatic side
- Cradle pt scapula with hand closest to feet
- Pt protracts shoulder
- Resist
- Hold for 10 seconds and get pt to breathe in and out
- On the out breath encourage the scapula into a retracted position which will induce the lengthening of the pectoralis minor
MET - SUBSCAPULARIS - SUPINE
MET - INFRASPINATUS AND TERES MINOR - SUPINE
MET - PECTORALIS MAJOR - SUPINE
- Pt supine
- Lift the arm on the symptomatic side and take it away from the body in the scapula plane
- Place other hand on top of pectoralis major (if pt is a female ask them to place their hand on their pecs first)
- Pt tries to pull their arm across their body
- Resist
- Hold for 10 seconds and get pt to breathe in and out
- On the out breath take the pt arm further into the scapula plane by pushing the arm downwards
THIS IS FOR THE STERNAL FIBRES
MET - LATISSIMUS DORSI - SIDE LYING
- Pt side lying on asymptomatic side
- Interlock your hand closest to pt head with their top arm
- Pt tries to adduct arm to their body
- Resist
- Hold for 10 seconds and get pt to breathe in and out
- On the out breath place your other hand on pt iliac crest
- Apply pressure to pt iliac crest and further abduct their arm to stretch the latissimus dorsi
MET - LEVATOR SCAPULAE - SUPINE
- Pt supine
- Place one hand under the head
- Place other hand on top of shoulder
- Guide pt head into a side bend away from the symptomatic side, followed by flexion (tucking chin to chest) until you feel the bind
- Ask pt to push their neck into extension
- Resist
- Hold for 10 seconds
- After 10 seconds ask pt to relax and take a deep breath in and out
- While the pt is breathing out take the head into further flexion, with an added left rotational movement
MET - SUPRASPINATUS - SEATED
MET - RHOMBOID - SUPINE
MET - RHOMBOID - SIDE LYING
Pt side lying
Palpate the medial border of scapula through pt arms
MET - BICEPS
Pt seated
Elbow flexed 90
Stabilise at pt elbow and hold superior to their wrist
Pt performs a bicep curl
Resist
Relax and take to the new barrier - which is more extension
MET - TRICEPS
Pt seated
Elbow flexed slightly more than 90
Stabilise at pt elbow and hold superior to their wrist
Pt extends arm at elbow
Resist
Relax and take to the new barrier - which is more flexion
MET - STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID - SUPINE
- Pt supine
- Knees bent with a pillow under pt shoulder blades
- Hold round the pt head and turn the head into full rotation away from the symptomatic side
- Pt holds this position without help from the practitioner for 10 seconds
- After 10 seconds take control of pt head and slowly lower it onto the couch, still keeping the rotation
- Place one hand on pt temporal bone and other hand on the pt sternum (if pt is a female ask them to place their hand on their sternum first)
- Pt breathes in and out
- While the pt is breathing out, introduce more pressure onto pt sternum while stabilising the head with the other hand
