How is the upper GIT classified?

From the mouth to the duodenum.

What are the common landmarks?
A
- Tongue in the oropharynx
- Pharynx back of the larynx
- 2 sphincters in the esophagus.

what is the function of the upper sphincter?
A
The main purpose of the UPPER SPHINCTER (UES) is to prevent aspiration, so it is to prevent things spilling from the esophagus into the trachea when you swallow.

what is the function of the lower sphincter?
A
The LOWER SPHINCTER has a function to prevent acid/ stuff from the stomach back up to the esophagus.
