UOF POLICY
Only that force reasonably necessary under the circumstances may be used. Force shall never be used when assigned duties can be discharged without it. Excessive force shall never be used. However nothing in the CG UOF shall be construed as to require personnel to meet force with equal or lesser force.

Circumstances Boarding Team Members are Authorized to use Force:
- Individual Self Defense
-To Compel Compliance With a Lawful Order The USCG has Authority To Issue.
-Prevent a Federal Crime.
Effect a Lawful Arrest or Prevent an Escape when There is Probable cause that the suspect committed a federal crime.
-To prevent the theft of, intentional damage to, or destruction of property the CG has authority to protect.
Fourth Amendment protections:
Unlawful searches and seizures.
How to ensure officer presence and maintain an atmosphere of compliance:
-Uniform pressed.
-Boots shined.
-Badges/Ribbons Aligned properly.
Demeanor an Officer should have to create an atmosphere of compliance:
Walk with confidence and authority.
Demeanor officer should refrain from having:
Overly Aggressive.
Reaction Time:
Amount of time necessary to perceive the threat, analyze the situation, develop a strategy and initiate response.
Reactionary gap:
Distance between officer and subject 4-6ft should always be maintained, if distance cant be maintained due to limited space, officer should attempt to place an object between themselves and the subject.
Triangulation:
Oriented positions between multiple officers are necessary to provide overlapping fields of view of the potential threat.
Contact officer:
They make verbal and physical contact with the subject.
Cover officer:
Maintains a heightened state of readiness to protect both the contact and cover officer.
LEAPS: effective communication to de-escalate a situation.

Verbal Commands:
Verbal commands in the form of task direction with consequences aimed at the subject.
Example: “Get on the ground or you will feel pain.”

Communicates seriousness of the situation.
