Hostage Situation:
Situation in which a person is held and threatened by a subject to force demands on a third party, normally LE.
Initial response to a hostage situation:
-ICER:
I solate
C ontain
E vacuate
R report
- Ensure your own safety by approaching the crisis area cautiously.
- Cover, draw,security perimeter, verbal contact.
- Isolate threat / evacuate innocents.
Evacuating:
Identify individuals who have pertinent information related to the incident and muster them at a safe location for interviewing purposes.
Reporting:
-Update chain of command/responding units.
-continue to collect and validate information.
Actions to take if taken hostage:
1- Do not antagonize yourself or threaten the hostage taker.
2- Do not play hero.
3-Do not panic, complain or cry.
4-Nurture the Stockholm syndrome.
5-Present yourself as a person, not an object.
6- If you get a chance to escape, go!
