Unti 2- Heat Transfer Flashcards
What is a thermal insulator
Is a material that does not transfer heat energy easily
What is convection
Is heat transfer in a liquid or gas-when particles in a warmer region gain energy and move into cooler region carrying this energy with them
What is conduction
Is the transfer of heat energy through a material
What is radiation
Is energy that is carried mainly by infrared radiation
When the water rises in a convection current what happens to it?
It becomes less dense and heats up
When the water sinks in a convection current what happens to it?
It becomes more dense and cools
What is good at keeps heat in and what are bad?
Good: shiny white
Bad: matte black
What are shiny/ light coloured objects good at
They are good reflectors of heat
What are black objects good at
They are good absorbers and emitters of heat
What are the 4 best conductors?
- Aluminium
- Copper
- Brass
- Steel
What does conduction cause
It cause particles to vibrate more quickly and they need more space so the object expands
What are only metal
Metals are only conductors and they only contain electrons
What is a thermal conductor
Is a material that transfers heat energy easily
Name four non-renewable source
