UNIT2 KA5 structure + functions Flashcards
What is the function of the valves
Stop blood flowing backwards
Why is the left ventricle thicker than the right
Left side works harder and pumps blood around the whole body
What artery supplies the heart with oxygenated blood
Coronary artery
What is the function of the arteries
To carry blood away from the heart
What happens to blood pressure when blood moves away from the heart
It decreases
How are arteries suited to their function
The elastic fibres stretch and recoil to accommodate the surge of blood
What is the role of the lymphatic vessels
The excess fluid drains into lymphatic vessels and are now called lymph
How is tissue fluid different from plasma
Tissue fluids do not contain blood proteins as they are too large to filter through the capillary wall
What happens to lymph
The lymphatic system moves lymph back into the bloodstream slowly
What is the function of the veins
To carry blood at low pressure back to the heart
Why is tissue fluid important
Supplies cells with glucose, oxygen and other substances
What causes pressure filtration
When pressure from arteries cause plasma to pass between the thin capillary walls into the tissue fluid that surrounds cells
What are the 2 transport systems called
Cardiovascular system
Lymphatic system
How are capillaries suited to their function
Very thin wall, 1 cell thick
Allows quick efficient exchange of materials
What is vasodilation
The relaxation of the smooth muscle
- the diameter of the central lumen increases, this increases blood flow in the capillaries
