Ka6 Flashcards
What are the 4 chambers of the heart
Left atrium
Left ventricle
Right atrium
Right ventricle
Why is the heart described as a double pump
Right side pumps blood to lungs then the left side pumps it to the body
Which blood vessel carries
Oxygenated blood to the left atrium
Pulmonary vein
Which blood vessel carries deoxygenated blood to the right atrium
Vena cava
Why is the muscle on the left side thicker then the right
It requires a higher pressure to pump blood around the full body
What is the function of the AV valves
Prevent back flow of blood from the ventricles to the atria
What is the function of the SL valves
Prevent back flow of blood at the entrance of pulmonary and aorta arteries
What is the cardiac output
The volume of blood pumped through each ventricle per minute
What is the cardiac output formula
CO= HR x SL
HR - number of heartbeats in 1min
SL- volume of blood pumped out the left ventricle during one contraction
What is a heart contraction
Systole
What is a heart muscle relaxation called
Diastole
What happens during diastole of the heart muscles
Atria fills with blood
Some blood flows into ventricles
What is atrial systole
Both atria contracts
Transfers remainder of the blood through AV valve to ventricles
What is ventricular systole
When both ventricles contract
Causing AV valves to close
Blood pumped out through SL valves to aorta and pulmonary artery
What is responsible of the hearts sound
Closing of the AV and SL Valves
