Unit Two: Photosynthesis ๐ Flashcards
Is photosynthesis exothermic?
No, It is Endothermic.
what does photosynthesis take place in?
the chloroplasts
what does photosynthesis combine to create glucose (to use as food)?
Water and Carbon Dioxide
what is given off as a by-product of photosynthesis?
Oxygen
what energy source is trapped by chlorophyll?
Sunlight (or any light)
what is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water (light/chlorophyll)= glucose + oxygen
whatโs the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
CO2+H2O=C6h12o6 + O2
whatโs the balanced chemical equation for photosynthesis?
6Co2 + 6H2o = C6h12o6 + 6O2
what ways can the plant use the glucose produced during photosynthesis?
use to produce energy, stored as starch, can be converted into protein or cellulose
what happens when a plant is placed in a bag with sodium hydroxide/soda lime?
the plant will produce no starch as no Co2 will be present so photosynthesis can occur. if this leaf was tested for starch it would likely not turn blue-black.
what happens when a plant is placed in a bag with sodium hydrogen carbonate?
this plant will produce lots of starch as lots of Co2 is present. a leaf from this plant when tested for starch would turn blue-black.
what structures are present inside a leaf?
the epidermis, waxy cuticle, palisade mesophyll, the spongy mesophyll, xylem, phloem, stomata and guard cell
what are leaves usually adapted for?
light absorption and gas exchange.
what is a limiting factor?
if one or more factor is in short supply, the rate of photosynthesis is limited, this is called the limiting factor/s
what is respiration?
when oxygen is consumed and carbon dioxide is released
what is photosynthesis in basic terms?
when carbon dioxide is consumed and oxygen is released
can photosynthesis and respiration occur at the same time?
yes
is respiration or photosynthesis faster during the daylight?
photosynthesis > respiration
is respiration or photosynthesis faster in the dark?
respiration > photosynthesis
is respiration or photosynthesis faster during dawn/dusk?
Respiration = Photosynthesis
what is taken in during respiration?
oxygen
whatโs given out during photosynthesis
oxygen
whatโs given out during respiration?
carbon dioxide
what is the compensation point?
where the rate of photosynthesis and respiration are equal so there is no net gas exchange
what is hydrogen carbonate indictor used to determine?
movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide in and out of plants
what conditions turn hyrdrogen carbonate indicator red?
normal atmospheric carbon dioxide levels
what conditions turn hydrogen carbonate indicator yellow?
increase in carbon dioxide levels (more acidic because carbon dioxide is acidic)
what conditions turn hydrogen carbonate indicator purple?
decrease in carbon dioxide levels (more alkaline)
