Metaphor

Analogy

Cliche
This means the dictionary definition.
Denotation
the secondary or suggestive meaning of the word, one that is not its literal or primary meaning in the dictionary
Connotation
used to substitute for a description that is considered harsh or blunt
Euphemism
a gross exaggeration to achieve an effect, usually for humor or emphasis
Hyperbole
a word or phrase that is substituted for another that is closely associated to it
Metonymy
is a literary device in which a part of something represents the whole, or vice versa.
Synecdoche
a combination of two ideas that appear to be opposite or contradictory
Oxymoron
an assertion that seems to be contradictory or silly but actually reveals some truth
Paradox
is when something happens that is the opposite of what was expected
Irony
a literary device in which words, grammatical constructions, or concepts are repeated in reverse order.
