Beliefs
Shared ideas explaining the world and reaffirming group affiliation
EX: Religious, or scientific
Cultural relativism
Study all cultures relative to their own history, don’t compare it to others
Ethnocentrism
The belief that one’s culture is superior to other cultures
Arranged Marriage
Arranged marriage is a type of marital union where the bride and groom are primarily selected by individuals other than the couple themselves, particularly by family members such as the parents
Cultural Relativism
Cultural relativism is the idea that a person’s beliefs, values, and practices should be understood based on that person’s own culture, and not be judged against the criteria of another
Functional Theory
Everything in a culture functions to meet the need of individuals to ensure survival and interdependence
Cultural Materialism
Materials and conditions within a society shape the way a culture is made. Anything that doesn’t hold value to society will be removed from the society
Explicit Cultural Knowledge
Cultural stuff that is common in all cultures, and is easy to understand such as marriage, kinship relations etc.
Tactic Cultural Knowledge
Cultural knowledge that we are not knowledgeable at. (informants will typically help us when we are in situations like this)
Technological Diffusion
is the adoption of a technology from another culture
Digital immigrants
digital immigrant is a person who grew up before the internet and other digital computing devices were ubiquitous - and so have had to adapt and learn these technologies.
digital natives
People who were born around technology, and didn’t have to adapt. (Gen Z)
Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis
the theory that language not only labels reality, but shapes our cultural identity
Euphemisms
A set of words used to describe an uncomfortable or inappropriate concept, in a polite or socially acceptable fashion
Roles
Potitions that we hold in society
Ex: Brothers, sisters, teachers, babysitters, mother, father, etc.
