Unit Test Atoms and Elements Flashcards
What is a mixture?
Combinations of pure substances
What is Physical change?
Changes in the size or form of matter (EX. Chopping wood)
What is Chemical change?
The matter changes and at least one new substance is formed (Always sometimes new. EX: rust and fireworks)
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space
What are solutions?
Something that looks like one substance but consists of one or more (Homogenous)
What is Adhesion?
When water sticks to other certain bodies
What are Isotopes?
An isotope is a different form of an element with the same atomic number but a different mass number.
What is Atomic Mass?
The total mass of particles in an atom
What is an Atomic Number?
The number of protons in an atom and it’s place on the table
What are protons?
Positively charged particles in the nucleus (The atomic number tells us how many protons there are)
What are neutrons?
A neutrally charged particle located in the nucleus (Atomic mass minus protons/atomic number tells us how many neutrons there are)
What are electrons?
Negatively charged particles around the nucleus. Same amount of electrons as there are protons. (They sit on things called rings/shells/energy levels/etc)
An atom that is neutral and stable
Protons = 6
Neutrons = 7
Electrons 6
Carbon
Positive Ion of Neutral atom Carbon
Take away on electron
