What is a resource?
Anything that can be used to produce goods and services, such as raw materials.
What are the different types of resources?
Renewable resources, non-renewable resources, flow resources, and other resources.
What is a renewable resource?
Resources that can be regenerated if used carefully.
What is a non-renewable resource?
Resources that are limited and can’t be replaced once used up.
What is a flow resource?
Resources that are replaced by natural actions whether used or not by humans.
What are the three industries?
Primary, Secondary, Tertiary.
Explain the Primary industry.
Industries that extract the raw materials from the environment.
Explain the Secondary industry.
Industries that are involved in the manufacturing/processing of raw items.
Explain the Tertiary industry.
Industries that are concentrated in the service sector.
How can individuals think about using resources wisely?
People need to realize that buying items isn’t just about the cost, its also about how it affects the environment.
How can companies think about using resources wisely?
Companies can save money when they abide by these rules because using less resources means having to spend less on those resources, meaning they make more money.
How can the government think about using resources wisely?
The government can offer both rewards and punishments. These are called carrots and sticks.
What is a carrot? (Provide an example)
A carrot is a reward that the government can give to the people if they follow these rules.
What is a stick? (Provide an example)
A stick is a punishment that the government can give for wasting resources or using it on things that are harming the environment.
Why do most Canadians take their food for granted?
Most of the time the food we have is always ready and is there when you want it. We also pay relatively little for the foods we have.
What two major factors influence farming?
Climate (temperature and precipitation) and land quality.
What is a GDD?
Growing degree-days. It is a measure of how warm the growing season is in a specific location.
Why is it so important to manage Class 1-4 lands?
The amount of land that is labelled as good to excellent farmland is 5%, while the rest is considered to low quality for agriculture.
What percentage of land is good to excellent for agriculture?
Around 5%.
What percentage of land is class 7? (Worst land)
Around 87%.
What is the difference between intensive and extensive farming?
Intensive farming requires relatively small areas of land while extensive need large areas of land. Intensive farms have lots of manual labor (workers) while extensive usually has less. Intensive are often located near urban areas while extensive create wheat and oil for exporting.
What is hydroponics?
Hydroponics is the use of water with no soil to grow the different plants. (Lettuce)
