Formal Experiments
Environments are created with manipulations in order to observe the results. Can manipulate environment.
Experimenter Bias
If you are only looking for data that confirms hunch, you have experimenter bias.
Observer Bias
Looking to see what they expect
Double Blind
Both participants and observer doesn’t know true purpose of the study
Single Blind
Doesn’t know true purpose of study (only one person of those involved)
Selection Bias
Chosen participants with a purpose
Random Assignment
Assigning participant roles with no motive
Population
the total number of people available to be in the study
Representative Sample
Choosing participants for a study that will represent the demographics of the population
Random Sample
Participants are chosen randomly, not by age or gender, etc.
Dependent Variable
The resulting behavior
Independent Variable
The manipulation
Confounding variable
Unintentional, uncontrolled, unexpected influences
Reliability
Experiment can be repeated often with same result
Validity
Choosing an appropriate research method that actually measures what you want
