Unit IX: Glucagon, glucose, GTT....... Flashcards
This deck contains all of the Pagana Pagana required for unit IX: Diabetes
What is the normal blood glucose levels?
70-110mg/dL
What are glucose levels controlled by?
Insulin and glucagon
In a fasting stae glucose is _____.
Low
Insulin drives glucose into cells and to be metabolized into?
Glycogen, amino acids, and fatty acids. This will lower the glucose levels
What are th normal findings of Glucagon?
50-100pg/mL
Glucagon is secreted by the _______.
Alpha cells of the islets of langerhans
Why is glucagon secreted?
in response to low glucose level. it tries to raise glucose levels
In an insulin dependent pt c diabetes and c hypogycemia the glucagon levels will?
Not change the glucagon stimulation does not occur
Wht should you suspect of a pt with high Glucagon levels?
Renal failure
What does the glucose levels do c renal failure and high glucagon levels?
it rises.
What is the normal fasting glucose? And what is “fasting” defined as?
Fasting glucose level is 70-110mg/dL and fasting is defined as “No caloric intake for at least 8 hrs”
What are the findings for the fasting serum test of the glucose tolerance test(GTT)?
<110mg/dL
At what intervals do they do the GTT?
30 minutes, 1,2,3, and sometimes 4 hour marks
What 2 test can diabetes be Dx?
fasting blood glucose and GTT performed on separate days that are close in time.
What are the results for HbA1c you look for?
Nondiabetic: 4%-5.9%
GOOD diabetic control: 9%
