ABG pg. 112 Flashcards
What is the purpose of getting an ABG?
It is measurement of respiratory (ventilation) and metabolic (renal) acid/base and electrolyte homeostasis. Also measures the adequacy of oxygenation
What are 6 things you will gt from an ABG?
- pH
- Pco2
- HCO3(bicarbonate)
- Po2
- O2 saturation
- O2 content
What is pH inversely related to?
hydrogen concentration. As hydrogen goes up, pH goes down(more acidic)
What is the measurement of Pco2?
It measures the ventilation capability of the pt
What is Pco2 referred to as?
The respiratory component in acid/base determination
What does pH do as co2 rises?
pH will go down (more acidic)
Most of the co2 content in blood is?
most in the blood is HCO3
the bicarbonate ion is a measure of?
metabolic (renal/kidney) component of acid/base equilibrium
What does pO2 measure?
measures the oxygen content of arterial blood
O2 saturtion is a measure of _________ o2 saturtion
hemoglobin
When the Po2 levels fall below 60mmHg what happens?
A small decrease in Po2 will cause large decreases in the % of hemoglobin saturated c o2
a saturation of <70% what happens at the tissue level?
They are unable to extract enough O2 to carry out normal function. So a Po2 beow 70% is very dangerous, <60% just the slightest decrease in Po2 will cause a large drop in hemoglobin saturation (Oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve)
Normal range for pH?
7.35-7.45
Normal range for Pco2?
35-45 mm Hg
Normal ranges for HCO3?
21-28 mEq/L
