It is used to evaluate the adequacy of the extrinsic system and common pathway in the clotting mechanism.

What does PT measure?
A
It measures the clotting ability of factors I (fibrinogen), II (prothrombin), V, VII, and X.

What happens to the PT when clotting factors exist in deficient quantities?
A
It is prolonged

What are normal findings for PT?
A
Depends on the reagent used for PT. But can range from 11.0-12.5 seconds: 85%-100%.
Full anticoagulant therapy: >1.5-2 times control value; 20-30%
