What does Deism mean?
A popular Enlightenment era belief or theory that a God does exist; however this God does not participate nor get involved in people’s lives or in revealing truths to prophets
What does enlightenment mean?
A movement in the 18th century century that advocated for the use of reason in the reappraisal of accepted ideas and social institutions
What does Rationalism mean?
A theory or belief that opinions and actions should be based off of know,edge and rational thinking, rather than religious beliefs or emotional responses.
Who was John Locke?
A 17th century English philosopher, who opposed the Divine Right of Kings and who asserted that all people have a natural right to life, liberty, and property
Jean-Jacques Rousseau
(1712-1778) A Swiss-French political philosopher; he valued the social contract and discussed the nature of man in his work On the Origin of Inequality.
Who was George III?
Made King of England in 1760, he reigned during the American Revolution, but was an unpopular monarch.
What is Parliament?
A body of representatives that make laws for a nation.
Who was Lord Frederick North?
Prime minister: he urged parliament to repeal the Townshend acts because their effect was to damage trade and generate only a disappointing amount of revenue
What is salutary neglect?
An English policy of not strictly enforcing laws on its colonies: for example the Navigation Laws
