What was the Stamp Act Congress?
Assembled in 1765 in New York, 27 delegates from nine colonies debated together and made a statement to repeal the Stamp Act of 1764
Who was Patrick Henry?
A skilled public speaker who highly encouraged the move toward independence in Virginia, Governor of Virginia, politician. Most famous for “give me liberty, or give me death” line.
Sons of Liberty?
Was formed in 1765 as an opposition against the Stamp Act, boycotted and revolted against Britain; members included John Adams, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock.
Daughters of Liberty?
Established in 1765, in opposition of the Stamp Act, was made up of women that protested against the Stamp Act (only difference from the Sons of Liberty was the fact that they were women)
Samuel Adams
A founding father who was highly involved in the movement for independence, was part of the Continental Congress, assisted in the drafting of the Articles of Confederation, and the Declaration of Independence.
James Otis?
A lawyer from Massachusetts who highly encouraged the American rebellion
Committees of Correspondence?
Created by the colonists within the 13 colonies, was formed to communicate through the colonies, which became essential during the Revolutionary war.
Intolerable Acts?
Multiple acts passed by parliament in 1774 in response to the Boston Tea Party, centered mostly in Massachusetts, included:
- closing down the Boston port
- Allowing British officials to be tried in Britain
- allowing troops to stay in homes with no regard to the colonists already inhabiting said homes
John Dickinson and “Letters from a Farmer”
A series of essays written by the Pennsylvanian lawyer and legislator John Dickinson (1732-1808) and published under the name “The Farmer” from 1767 - 1768. Was important in uniting the colonists against the Townshend Acts
Boston Massacre?
The killing of five colonists by British troops on 5th March, 1770. It was the culmination of tensions in the American colonies that had been growing since Royal troops first appeared in Massachusetts in October 1768 to enforce the heavy tax burden imposed by the Townshend Acts
Boston Tea Party?
In 1771 a group of colonists protested thirteen years worth of increasing British oppression by attacking merchant ships in Boston Harbor (famously known as the time a bunch of colonists dressed up like natives and dumped tea [32 cartons?] into the harbor) In retaliation the British close the port and inflict even harsher penalties.
Massachusetts Circular Letter?
A statement by Samuel Adams and passed by the Massachusetts House of Representatives in February 1768 in response to the Townshend Acts
