Q

What attaches to the horizontal plate?

A

(1) musculus uvulae muscle
attachment: hard palate (horizontal plate of palatine bone) –> uvular mucosa
function: aids in palatopharyngeal closure
innervation: vagus n. (pharyngeal branch)
blood supply: ascending palatine and lesser palatine a.

(2) palatopharyngeus muscle
attachment: posterior hard palate (horizontal plate of palatine bone) and palatine aponeurosis –> wall of pharynx
function: elevation of pharynx and approximation of the palatopharyngeal folds
innervation: vagus n. (pharyngeal branch)
blood supply: ascending palatine, ascending pharyngeal and tonsilar a.
