Apartheid
- Means separateness.
* It existed in South Africa until the 1990’s.
Boycott:
The refusal to buy goods from a country.
Parent Country:
The European country that owns an African colony.
Disunity:
- Disunity means not being together.
- For example the Africans could not get together as one group to fight for independence because they were so spread apart by mountains and deserts. They had disunity.
Berlin Conference:
• It happened in the 1800’s.
• European countries met to settle
territorial disputes (fights over land) in Africa.
• Africans were not part of the conference.
• Rival tribes and clans were put into the
• same territories or countries.
Imperialism:
The establishing of colonies by taking the land of a weaker nation.
Cultural Diffusion:
- When an idea such as religion or language spreads from one group of people to another.
- An example of this is the Islam religion spreading to Africa because of trading.
Animists:
Animists believe in the presence of spirits in the natural world, and the forces of nature.
Cash Crops:
A term for the type of products grown in Africa and sold on the world market. Generally MOST of the product LEAVES the country and is not available for the Africans to use.
Lop-sided Economy:
Means that a country relies on only 1 or 2 exports for their income.

East Africa is the poorest region in Africa.
What are 3 results of the AIDS disease in Africa?
- It reduces the life expectancy in many countries
- It increases the number of orphans (children without parents).
- It decreased the economic productivity of Africa (not enough workers).
Africa has tried to modernize. What are some of the effects of the modernization?
- New technologies are available. Examples of new technology are computers, the Internet, better roads, and hospitals.
- The country of Africa is in debt because they had to borrow so much money to build the roads and hospitals.
- Africans are living in cities and their African Traditions are being forgotten.
Why did the slave trade end?
The slave trade ended because of the Industrial Revolution and the anti-slavery movement.
What was the effect of WWII on Africa?
World War II helped the Africans become more independent. It weakened the parent countries in Europe.
