- Initial hold determined by police, social worker, doctor
- Automatically sets up a hearing to see if patient needs to stay

- 3-17 days
- 5250 Hearing - patient advocate says why patient should be let go and hospital says why patient can’t leave. Judge decides and determines how long patient can stay.

- Patient can prove they are not a danger to self
- Patient has a right to file a write
- Seen by judge, who will say “show me the evidence”
- After 72 hours, and 5250 not written up, patient can leave

- Quantifies cognitive function

- At end of assessment, add the correct number of responses. Total - 30.
