Unit I - Key Terms Flashcards
Loading Dose
Is the higher amount of drug, often given only once to “prime” the bloodstream with a sufficient level of the drug.
Therapeutic Range
The plasma concentration of a drug between the minimum effect concentration and the toxic concentration.
Potency
Maximum effect at a lower dose
Toxic Concentration
The level of a drug that will result in serious adverse effects.
Pharmacodynamics
Are the biochemical changes that occur in the body as a result of taking a drug
Pharmacokinetics
Is the study of drug movement throughout the body.
Onset of Action
Is the amount of time it takes for a drug to demonstrate a therapeutic response.
Peak Effect
Is the time it takes a drug to demonstrate its full therapeutic effect.
Cumulative Effects
Occur when the amount of a drug the patient receives is greater that the rate it is excreted
Agonists
Are drugs that bind with receptors and precipitate greater than typical response.
Antagonists
Are drugs that bind with a receptor and either block or precipitate a less than typical response.
Efficacy
Magnitude of maximal effcts
Idiosyncratic Response
Unpredictable and unexplained reactions.
