Q

What situation necessitated the founding of the unit?

A

The failure of operation eagle claw taught the army that they needed a specially trained unit to handle the most challenging rotary wing missions. A rescue attempt was made to rescue hostages from Tehran. Only five out of the eight helicopters made it to the FSB and the mission was aborted. Upon RTB, one of the helos crashed into another transport acft killing 8 SME’s. It was the basis for deconfliction sop, FARP sop, and birthed the task force from the 101st abn div.
