Collective action

Collective action problem
the challenge of getting large groups of people to act in coordinated ways.
Counter frames
meant to challenge an existing social movement’s frame.
Countermovements
persistent, organized collective action meant to resist social movements.
Cultural opportunity structure
cultural ideas, objects, practices, or bodies that create or constrain activist strategies.
Critical events
sudden and dramatic occurrences that motivate nonactivists to become politically active.
Economic opportunity structure
a phrase that refers to the role of money in enabling or limiting a movement’s operations and influence.
Frames
succinct claims as to the nature of a social fact.
Framing wars
battles over whether a social fact is a social problem and what kind of problem it is.
Insurgent consciousness
the recognition of a shared grievance that can be addressed through collective action.
Interdependent power
the power of noncooperation.
Interest convergence
occurs when the interests of activists and elites align.
Organizational strength
a combination of strong leadership, human and material resources, social networks, and physical infrastructure. Step 1: define a state of affairs as harmful. Step 2: convincingly claim that the harm requires a cultural or institutional solution instead of a personal or interpersonal one.
Political networks
webs of ties that link people with similar political goals.
Political opportunity structure
the strengths and weaknesses in the existing political system that shape the options available to social movement actors.
