Unit C Flashcards
Properties of Light (hint: there are 4)
1) Light travels in straight lines.
2) Light can be reflected.
3) Light can be bent.
4) Light is a form of Energy.
Theorists of Light and Optics (KNOW ALL)
→specific names and theories
- Microscope
- Telescopes
Microscope
- A Microscope device which allows for the viewing of Very small objects.
- Has two lenses
- Objective
- Eyepiece
*When these 2 lenses are combined, you are then able to see in great details.
Telescopes
- Telescopes both magnify and they also collect light.
- It proides enlarged mages of distant objects using lenses and Mirrors.
- There are 2 main typesof telescopes:
-Refracting telescopes
- Reflecting telescopes
China
In Ancient times
used mirrors
Archimedes
In Ancient times
Planned for the use mirrors in war.
Pythagoras
In Ancient times
Thought light was beams of light coming from our eyes.
Euclid
In Ancient times
Thaought that Light was reflected, and that light travels in straight lines.
Ptolemy
He thought in the 1ST Century, that Light bends when it travels from air to glass.
Al-Haythem
1000 AD (Middle Ages)
He wrote a book to help explain optics, being the first to accurately describe how vision worked.
Isaac Newton
1670
-invented the reflecting telescope.
-showed that white light is a mixture of different colors of light.
Ole Romer
1676
Determined the speed of light.
Albert A. Michelson
1920’s
He was able to determine more accurately the speed of light.
what is the definition of Transparent?
-Light travels straight through it.
EX) glass
What is the definision of Translucent?
-It allow some light to pass through.
EX) frosted window
What is the definision of Opaque?
-absorb or reflect the light
EX) brick
Luminous vs. Non-Luminous
Non-luminous: does not produce light.
ex) pencil.
Luminous: produces light.
ex) lamp, sun
What is the definision of/ somthing being Luminous?
Luminous: produces light.
ex) Lamp, Sun
What is the definision of/ somthing being Non-Luminous?
Non-luminous: does not produce light.
ex) Pencil
Regular Reflection vs. Diffuse Reflection?
Regular Reflection:
-Light rays hit a smooth surface.
-Travel PARALLEL.
-Reflect at opposite angle.
-Produces a clear image.
Diffuse reflection:
-Light rays hit a rough surface.
-Light becomes scattered.
What is the definision of Diffuse Reflection?
Diffuse reflection:
-Light rays hit a rough surface.
-Light becomes scattered.
What is the definision of Regular Reflection?
Regular Reflection:
-Light rays hit a smooth surface.
-Travel PARALLEL.
-Reflect at opposite angle.
-Produces a clear image.
What is Speed of Light?
Light travels through space at a speed of 300 000 kilometers per second.
What the definision of a Concave Mirror?
Cave in
* Image appears to be closer than it actually is.
* Focal point is in front of mirror.
* Rays come together→converging rays.
* Reflects light from a large area.
- Flashlights
- Telescopes
- Cosmetic mirror
* Image from a concave mirror depends on the object’s distance from the focal point.
- There are 4 possibilities how an image will appear depending on the distance of the object:
1) The Object is far from the focal point that result in:
- Upside-down image (inverted)
- Smaller Size
- image lands in front of the mirror
2) The Object is closer to the focal point that result in:
- Upside-down image (inverted)
- Larger Size
- Image is in front of the mirror
3) The Object is on the focal point that result in:
- No image
4) The object is between the focal point & mirror that result in:
-Upright image
-enlarged
-The image will land behind the mirror
What is the definision of a Convex Mirror?
- Bulge out.
- Rays spread out→ diverging rays.
- Image appears much smaller and farther away than the object.
- Can reflect light from a large area.
- Focal point is in behind mirror:
-Rear-view mirrors
and side mirrors on cars.
What is the definision of Refraction
-Reflection: light strikes a surface and bounces back off that surface.
-How it reflects depends on the Law of Reflection.
