Cross
Jesus’ death is central to the Christian understanding. His death at the hands of the Romans shows the fullness of his human nature, and the resurrection which Christians believe followed a few days later shows the fullness of his divinity.
Altar/Table
For Jewish people the altar was a place where offerings were made to God, the result of the sacrifices was forgiveness for wrong-doing, and restoration of relationship with God.
Christians believe Jesus offers forgiveness and restoration with God. When seen as a table this furnishing is a symbol of community, of people sharing in the love of God around a sacred meal known as the Lord’s Supper, Holy Communion or the Eucharist.
Pulpit/Lectern -
Christians see the Bible as important to their faith because it is in the Bible that they believe God is revealed in a way we can understand and relate to. For Christianity the Bible contains truth about God and humans, and is considered the inspired Word of God meant to reveal God and God’s will to us.
Candles
Though practical in nature, candles also provide symbolism about revelation, and remind Christians that Jesus, who called himself the Light of the World, is in their midst.
Stained Glass / Artwork / Musical instruments
Christians see beauty and creativity as reflective of God’s nature. Music has been used in Christian worship from the very beginning, and through the centuries the Christian Church has encouraged the arts as an expression of faith.
