Unit A: Biological Diversity Flashcards
Biological diversity
The variability of species and ecosystems on Earth and the ecological process of which they are a part
Ecosystem diversity
of different ecosystems on earth
Ex. Boreal forest, prairies
They include biotic and abiotic things
Community diversity
of different species living in the same area and sharing the resources
Ex wildebeest, antelope, and zebras on the Serengeti Plains
They are made of several populations
Genetic diversity
Variations between members of a population at a cellular level
Number of and colour of bands on the banded snail, blood types of humans
Species
Group of organisms having the same structure and reproducing with one another
Ecosystems
Any place in which biotic things live and interact with other biotic and abiotic things
Population
Members of a same species living in a specific area sharing resources
Community
Populations of different species living in the same area
Variability
Variation within a species a.k.a. differences among individuals the differences between individuals can help them survive and adapt environmental changes
Discrete variation
~Differences in characteristics a defined form
~such as being a albino or having blue eyes
“either/ or”
Continuous variation
Differences in characteristics that have a range of forms, such as height in humans or the mass in squirrels
Niche
Role of an organism plays with in the ecosystem
(includes it to its habitat, range, it’s effect on other species and then environment, and its predators)
having different niches closely related species can survive
example owls hunt at night hawks hunt in the daytime
General relationships
Are where trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen in most other organisms need oxygen and produce carbon dioxide
Specific relationships
Involve the interaction of two groups in symbiosis and predation are two ex.
Predator prey relationship
one species hunts another for food (keeps both populations under control)
example lynx and snowshoe hair
