Unit A Flashcards
The holistic understanding of human life divides our being into what 4 sections
(P.I.E.S)
Physical- our flesh and bones-our identity (we belong we are unique)
Intellectual-our thoughts and dreams-our memory and imagination (creativity)
Emotional-our feeling and intuitions-our gut response (primitive response) to circumstances
Spiritual-our experience of awe and wonder- the need for purpose and meaning (why am I here? What is life all about) our connection with the bigger picture (and ultimately god)
What can spirituality be described as?
A vast longing that drives us beyond ourselves in an attempt to to connect with our world and to understand it. Beyond that it is the inner compulsion to connect with God
Faith is considered to be a part of all 4 holistic beliefs but which one the most?
Spiritual being
What are the definition of the three related words:
Faith
Trust
Hope
Faith: confidence in someone or something that is based on relationship in the present and influenced by past experiences and desire for something in the future. It is related most closely to our spiritual being.
Trust: based on experiences from the past and is related most closely to our intellectual being
Hope: based on desire for something in the future and is related most closely to our emotional being
What is a leap of faith
It’s energized by the emotional part of a person (hope and future)
Informed by the intellectual part (trust and past)
Sustained and shaped by the spiritual (faith and present)
Practiced and performed using the physical part of a person.
What is an example of a leap of faith in the bible
Matthew 14:22-23
Peter walking on water to god
In a Christian context what is faith and relationship?
Christian faith considers both relationship with god and one another as the most important aspect of their lives.
Teaches that Jesus is a mediator of god and people and that we can enter relationship to god through him
How is Christian faith both personal and communal?
An individual can have their own different relationship with Jesus and god that’s unique to each person. But when there is trust confidence in Jesus that faith brings them into a community with others aswell as god.
What is religion vs faith
Religion is a humans construct of using laws and rituals to be closer to god
Faith is based on relationship over all else and according to chritianity god is more interested in faith then religion
What are two examples of Jesus choosing faith over religion
- Mark 3:16 when Jesus heals a man on sabbath day showing that relationship is more meaningful than the law of not doing work
- Matthew 21:12-13 When he flipped the money changers tables in the temple of Jerusalem
What does god is creator mean?
To say god is creator is to say god is responsible for everything around us. This does not challenge science as science asks the question of how things came to be but faith and religion ask the question of why. God is the one that brought us into the world INTENTIONALLY
What’s the Fibonacci series?
A numerical sequence that is constantly found throughout nature so much it’s uncanny. Some call the Fibonacci series as the fingerprint of god and is shown as a mark of gods proud creation, a signature for example.
What are some examples of the Fibonacci sequence in real life
Spiral galaxies including the Milky Way
Nautilus snail shells
Many flowers
Numbers line up with trees
Archetictue
The Mona Lisa
Science vs faith
There is no conflict between the two unless on is to look at the creation accounts in genesis as a scientific test. Other than that sciences asks how and faith asks why.
Explain the 1 Genesis creation account
It emphasizes order and intention. We are here on purpose by gods god is beyond nature and declares the nature of creation is good. And that the world came together orderly and intentional and god liked all his creations. It’s a direct comparison to the other violent creation stories in the Middle East
